Description
The Big Penguin is rumoured to be the largest penguin in the world! The three-metre high concrete statue was erected as part of the celebrations to commemorate the centenary of the "Proclamation of the Town of Penguin", 25th October 1875. The Big Penguin park is an excellent spot from which to admire the views across Bass Strait.
The town of Penguin took its name from the fairy penguin, the smallest species in southern Australia and New Zealand, weighing only 1 kilogram and standing about 30 centimetres high. You may be lucky and spot the real thing, as some fairy penguin colonies still dot the shores of Tasmania's north-west coast.
The Big Penguin stands in the foreshore park in Main Street, Penguin, opposite the Visitor Information Centre. Tel: (03) 6437 1421.
