Description
Moonarie - situated at the heart of the Flinders Ranges - is a remote, rugged and beautiful crag, with outstanding climbing. Although considered the best cliff in Australia by many, this is a well kept secret. Few visitors seem to come here, but that may have something to do with its remote location. Routes are adventurous and wind their way up clean faces with hand-friendly cracks.
With over 300 routes and grades ranging upwards from 12, both single pitch and multi pitch (up to 120 metres), there is something for everyone. It's a bit of a hike (40 minutes uphill) to get to the climbing, but most people who go seem to think it's worth it. You'll want to pack hexes, cams and nuts for all routes, as there are no climbs fully equipped with fixed protection. Two ropes will be needed to abseil off the top of most routes.
Best Time To Go
Winter (June to August) is particularly popular here, because summers are seriously hot in the desert. Just remember that conditions at night can be freezing! Autumn (March to May) and Spring (September to November) are also good options.
Location
The Flinders Ranges is South Australia's largest mountain range and starts approximately 200 kilometres north of Adelaide. You'll find Moonarie 40 minutes north of Hawker - look for the Arkaroo Rock sign and take a left. If you make it to Wilpena Pound you've gone too far! However, you might want to go to the visitor centre here for supplies - the camp site near Moonarie has no facilities, so make sure you take plenty of water with you. You can also camp on a broad rock ledge at the top of the ascent, which boasts a spectacular view at sunrise and sunset.
