Description

Kangaroo Point, situated on the Brisbane River just across from the city centre, is the ultimate urban climbing ground. The Kangaroo Point Cliffs feature excellent rock climbing possibilities for all skill levels. They are not natural, but created by a quarrying operation which mined the volcanic rock or rhyolite lava flows which form the cliffs. More affectionately known as 'KP', the cliffs are mainly used as a training ground by South East Queensland's rockclimbers and for recreational climbing.

There are over 200 routes on the main wall, with grades ranging from low teens to the mid 20s. A lot of them are around 20 metres in length, but you will find shorter and longer options. Concrete bollards at the top of the cliff allow for top rope anchors on many of the climbs. If you don't have your own gear or climbing buddy, there are a lot of groups that climb here in the afternoons. It's also a great place for a BBQ!

Best Time To Go

Climbing at KP is popular all year round. The cliff's rocky formations are lit by numerous flood lights making climbing possible at night - a good option in summer when the rock gets really hot during the day. When it's not busy (during business hours), parking is easy to find at the base of the cliffs. Public transport is also nearby, or you can park at the top of the cliffs on River Terrace when it's busier.
