Description

Around 360 kilometres north-west of Sydney, the Warrumbungles offer some of Australia's most adventurous long routes - from 100 to 450 metres long! Situated within Warrumbungle National Park, the mountains were shaped by an ancient volcano which has eroded over millions of years.

The routes are generally quite serious, irrespective of the grade, and route-finding is almost always a problem - but this just adds to the adventure. The grades of the routes range from 8 to 24 but the majority are between 14 and 21. There are four main climbing areas - Crater Bluff, Belougery Spire, Touduron and Bluff Mountain.

The spectacular rocky peaks are popular for climbing - you'll need to register at the visitor centre before you get started. Climbing is permitted everywhere except the Breadknife and Chalkers Mountain. Local temporary bans may also be imposed from time to time to protect endangered animals like the brush tailed rock wallabies. The register system is in place to avoid overcrowding and for the safety of climbers in the event of an emergency.

Best Time To Go

You can climb any time of year, but conditions can be hot in summer. The best times to visit are in Autumn (March to May) and Spring (September to November). There are numerous camping areas throughout the park, but a popular spot with climbers is Balmor Hut.
