Description

Affectionately known as the Blueys, this is another iconic area where many climbers are keen to go. In places, the plateau has been eroded by rivers and streams to form an almost endless diversity of crags and climbing styles from one-pitch sport crags to multipitch trad routes. The super-scenic Blue Mountains is the new home of Australia's climbing elite.

Climbs range from low-grade through to modern gymnastic routes (low teens up to 34), perfect for testing strength and technique. There are thousands of routes - sport, traditional and adventure climbing are all available here, as is bouldering. Many climbs incorporate cracks and edges. The rock is sandstone, but can be sharp.

Best Time To Go

Climbing in the Blue Mountains is possible throughout the year, although in winter (June to August) you will need to climb in the sun (it has been known to snow) and in summer (December-February) it's best to avoid it. September through to April can be very busy.

Location

From Sydney, head west along the Great Western Highway (1.5 hours) or catch a train from Central Station (2 hours). The best climbing starts at around Katoomba and Blackheath is probably the most central climbing town. With an array of coffee shops and a great bakery an early morning stop in Blackheath is highly recommended.
