Description
Roma is a 485km drive west of Brisbane and the beginning of Queensland’s real Outback. Over 100 years ago, the accidental discovery of Australia’s first oil and gas reserves catapulted Roma onto the world stage. There is still enough oil in the area for some curious small industries and to support a small refinery, but the gas deposit are even larger and Roma contributes to Brisbane’s supply through a pipeline. It’s now also the centre of a sheep and cattle-raising district.
The Big Rig Complex, a museum of oil and gas exploration centred on the old, steam-operated oil rig at the eastern edge of town offers nightly sound and light shows on Wednesday and Saturday at 7.30 form September to March.
The Roma Court House is another attraction. It was built in 1901 in brickwork instead of common timber, which was considered to be more substantial and durable and reflected Roma’s growth in population, economic importance and political power.
There are also a lot of bottle trees in the town, with the largest one with a girth of 8.9 metres. Roma is a good place to stop and stay overnight along the Great Inland Way from Sydney to Cairns or on the way from Brisbane to Carnarvon Gorge. There are some accommodations and camper van parks.
