Description
Cape Tribulation is a headland and locality in northern Queensland, 110km north of Cairns. It is located within the Daintree National Park and the Wet Tropics World Heritage area. Rainforested mountains sweep down to long sandy beaches. One of the most biologically diverse areas in the world, the Cape Tribulation area was included in the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area in 1988.
Kuku Yalanji Country
This part of Australia has spiritual and cultural significance for the Kuku Yalanji people, the traditional owners of the entire Daintree-Cape Tribulation/Bloomfield region. As a whole, this extends from Mossman in the south to Annan River in the north and as far west as Laura and Palmer River.
The islands, beaches, creek mouths, backing dunes and lowland rainforest of the Daintree area provided a major focus for camping and other uses for the Kuku Yalanji. Combined with the fringing reef and sea, a diverse range of resources were available to the Yalanji people on a systematic, seasonal and cultural basis.
Characteristic cultural features of the Daintree region include a complex network of Aboriginal walking tracks. These were based around two major tracks, one along the coast and one further inland which wre joined by an intricate network of associated tracks which connected all destinations, places of cultural importance and resource use. Many of these were later developed into the roads and tracks used todoay.
Open sites are also common in the rainforest-covered coastal flats and coastal areas as isolated camps. Such sites generally consist of small nut cracking rocks, grinding implements or combination of both. Artifacts are also often present.
When to go...
Most people visit the area during the dry season between July - November. During the wet season marine stingers are prevalent causing locals and visitors to swim in the many creeks not infested with crocodiles. Typical activities available are guided nightwalks, 4-wheel-drive tours, horse-riding, kayaking, jungle surfing and crocodile cruises to name a few.
The Daintree Cape Tribulation coast is where the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest meet, the only place on earth where two World Heritage areas exist side by side. Stay a few days and learn to appreciate the area with local tour guides. The Daintree National Park is an ecotourism paradise, and there is a variety of accommodation close by.
