Description

The Blackdown Tableland is a spectacular 600m sandstone plateau that rises suddenly out of the flat plains of central Queensland. This impressive national Park features stunning panoramas, waterfalls, great bushwalks and Aboriginal rock art, plus some unique wildlife and plant species. The turn-off to the Blackdown Tableland is 11km west of Dingo and 35km east of coal-mining centre of Blackwater. From the base of the Tableland the first 6km stretch is a steep and winding bitumen road. At the top you will come to the breathtaking Horseshoe Lookout, with picnic tables, barbecues and toilets. There is walking trail to Two Mile Falls (2km) starting here.

The picturesque South Mimosa Creek camping ground is a self-registration camping area about 8km on unsealed road form Horseshoe Lookout. It has pit toilets and fireplaces – you’ll need to bring water, firewood and/ or fuel stove. Bookings are advised.

Departing from the campground you can follow and 2.8km culture circuit track which offers interesting park history about the Ghungalu people 1000years ago and the early European settlers in 1869. There is another short walk to Mook Mook (Officer’s Pocket) Lookout (1.2km one-way).

If you drive a further 8km you will get to the start of the nice 2km walk to Gudda Gumoo (Rainbow Water) which ends at the Rainbow Falls with a series of rocky pools and platforms.

For a great 4WD adventure follow the 19km loop road back to Horseshoe lookout. You will pass magnificent sandstone outcrops, alive with basket ferns and king orchids. The Loop Road is only a one-way loop for 4WD and may be closed during wet weather.
