Description

Adelaide is the fifth-largest city in Australia, with a population of over 1.1 million in 2006, and is the capital and most populous city of the state of South Australia. These days the city stretches from the coast to the foothills of the Mt Lofty Ranges - only planning restrictions on the surrounding Adelaide Hills and Barossa Valley have stopped it from spreading further. The site for Adelaide was chosen in December 1836 by Colonel William Light, who created its remarkable design. Unlike many of the early European settlements, the city of Adelaide was unusual in that it was settled by free people - the city has no convict history. Perhaps this is why it has been described as having a calm and civilised feel, in contrast to the other Australian capital cities.

One of Adelaide's unique charms is how easy it is to get around - hit the streets on foot to explore the historic architecture, elegant arcades and churches prevalent throughout the city, or jump on one of the free buses available. You can venture to the seaside suburb of Glenelg, or head up to Montefiore Hill for a spectacular view over Adelaide. There are also a number of museums and galleries to visit, some fabulous day trips to local wineries, whale watching opportunities and more.

Festivals and food. Arts and culture. Shopping and sports. This is Adelaide - the city where there's always something on.
