Description

The Big Staircase is one of Australia’s most unique Big Things as it doesn’t represent an animal or fruit. Built in 1966, the staircase is officially known as the DNA Tower, as it resembles the double-helix molecule structure of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). Perth's Big Staircase is based on the famous double-spiral staircase in the Royal Chateau at Blois in the Loire Valley in France.

The 15-metre high structure has 101 steps which lead to... nowhere! However, from the top of the staircase you can enjoy panoramic views of the Perth city skyline, Swan River, Darling Scarp and Indian Ocean.

The Big Staircase is located on Forrest Drive in King's Park, Botanic Gardens, Perth.
