Description

The Big Apple in Donnybrook is by far the biggest of the Big Apples in Australia. Built in 1988, this fibreglass Lady William apple has a height of 7.5 metres and a diameter of 6.5 metres. It sits atop a 20-metre high tower at the Big Apple Tourist and Wildlife Park, which you can climb for a view of the surrounding apple orchards. You will have to plan your visit in advance, as entry to the park is only available by prior appointment.

Donnybrook, 210 kilometres south of Perth, is the major apple growing area of Western Australia. The first Granny Smith apple tree was planted in 1900, although the apple industry did not get started until after the Great War. It was George Parke who was the the first orchardist to plant apples commercially. Fruit harvest takes place from approximately December to May each year, but October is the best time to see the roads lined with amazing displays of apple and cherry blossom. The Donnybrook Apple Festival will be held at Easter in 2008, when they are also planning to open the Apple Fun Park!

The Big Apple is located at the Big Apple Tourist and Wildlife Park, Grist Road, Donnybrook. Tel: (08) 9835 1119 to book an appointment to visit the park.
